gazing out to see
where I’ve came from
and where I’ll be…

There is an old and basic longing in some of us to return to the shoreline. Not just any shoreline, not that beach with the asphalt parking lot, the lifeguard stands, public toilets, the designated swimming and no swimming areas, but a real beach without any of that stuff. Just the sun, the sea, ocean breeze, sand, beach grass and perhaps some coral. The earliest, most basic, fundamental and primordial elements of our existence that haven’t changed since our ancestors swam up to that beach and crawled out of the ocean to begin a land based life. To make a journey back to some untamed and wild beach, one where the only human footprints we find are our own, we are returning in solitude, to our mother and when we do that, we not only pay tribute to her and to us but we are also reconnecting with the place and the essential elements that formed us. This is important because as any navigator or wayfinder understands; that to truly know where one is headed, you must understand where you’ve come from. Otherwise we’re just drifting…
There is no internet in this place and I mark that as a good thing. We do get a sometimes, one-bar, voice only cell phone connection and I won’t hold that agains it, not too much. I love the remoteness as well at the unspoiled, timeless beauty of this place. I’m jotting these thoughts down because I know that if I don’t they’ll soon get blended with all the other new and interesting places that’s we’re visiting. I’ll post them the next time I get to an internet connection. Our big old world is shrinking as the internet, roads, cities and airports expand. All that stuff brings so much into our lives but sadly it takes some important things away too.
